About this opportunity

As an ocean conservation volunteer, you’ll be using and improving your scuba diving skills while being actively involved in restoring the natural ecosystem. Marine Conservation volunteers provide support to underwater clean-up efforts, helping to reduce ocean pollution and conserve marine life. As an ocean conservation volunteer, you’ll be using and improving your scuba diving skills while being actively involved in restoring the natural state of the marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean. When having no diving experience, volunteers will have to gain some before engaging in any underwater conservation activities. The Program Fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment, and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor. All volunteers complete internationally recognized PADI diving certifications. Depending on your current diving experience and the length of your stay you’ll complete a certification ranging from Open Water Diver to Advanced Open Water Diver. The project works with a local diving school, therefore you are always supervised by an experienced dive instructor. By joining this project you’ll become part of a worldwide movement of passionate people dealing with the global challenge of litter and the impact human development is having on the marine environment. All efforts on the project work towards the vision of healthier oceans, thriving ecosystems and a clean coastline. As part of this, your tasks as a volunteer can include collecting trash from the sea, logging information on items collected, learning more about the marine ecosystem and how to protect it, and observing and identifying fish. Please, note in your application when you apply for the program if you have any existing dive certifications. Typical day After the initial orientation day, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift at your placement and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the project that you are participating on. A typical schedule is as follows: 7 – 10 am | Breakfast at the volunteer accommodation 10 am | Travel to the diving center to join local placement staff and get training and dive. 13.30 pm | Lunch is served at the accommodation. In the morning you can grab a “packed lunch” to have in the city or at your placement 2 – 7 pm | Explore the city, relax, attend Spanish language lessons or enroll other activities 8 – 10 pm | Dinner at the accommodation. After dinner you will have the remainder of the evening free to relax and use as you wish. Note: Monday’s welcome session and city tour online happen in the first week. The following weeks it’s a regular day of volunteering. Free-time activities Spain is a country with a long historical and cultural heritage being reflected on the food, architecture, people and language. Its second biggest city, Barcelona, is an enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture, sun-drenched beaches and picturesque neighbourhoods. Combine relaxing, exploring, meeting people and enjoying the weather. Every month there's a different celebration or main event in the city. If you happen to be around, check the festivities calendar for that month! Most like those will be vibrant happenings.
